The Community Food Pantry - Fighting the Hunger Crisis in Reno-Sparks for Over 10 Years

It’s hard to believe that with a surging economy there are still individuals in our community that struggle. Not just to pay the rent, put gas in their car or keep the lights on but simply to keep food in the fridge and keep their families fed and well-nourished. In fact, the large number of individuals still facing food insecurity throughout the region is shocking. However, one local organization has quietly worked for over a decade to fight this crisis. The Community Food Pantry provides emergency food to those in need throughout the greater Reno/Sparks area. Led by Barbara Monroy, the organization opens its doors twice a week, offering individuals and families a three-day food supply once a month. Annually, the food pantry serves 20,000 people, half of which are children, with the help of a dedicated volunteer base who log 5,000 hours yearly. Food is received through a partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, contributions from local grocery stores and donations from individuals and families in the fight to rid the community of hunger and food insecurity. The pantry also offers a mobile program that serves senior citizens residing in motels and senior centers.

However, the task of running an operation of this size is no easy feat. To avert costs, the organization holds an annual fundraiser, aptly named "Empty Bowls," which aligns with an international project to fight hunger. Prior to the event, the pantry invites the community to paint bowls that will then be auctioned at the event where a simple soup and salad dinner is served, bringing the ‘Empty Bowl’ message full circle.
