“Thirteen Ways to Tame the Devil Within in 2013”

The New Year is a great time for new goals. Here are thirteen ways you can turn away from the dark side and walk into a light and bright New Year.


Stop eating junk: Promising to make a major dietary overhaul is one many of us make every year, and one that we often forget. This year, set small goals. Trying making one small improvement to your diet each month.


Get moving: Once again, start small. Making one shift in your everyday activity level each month – parking farther away at work, taking the stairs to your apartment – can add up to big changes over the course of the year.


Go to bed: Most women are chronically sleep deprived. Aim for 7-9 hours a night to avoid the negative effects of sleep deprivation, such as memory loss, food cravings and weight gain, and lowered immunity.


Be proactive about your health: With a busy schedule, it is easy to put off medical appointments. Make this year the year you take charge of your health.


Drink up! It is estimated that 75% of people are in a state of mild dehydration, which can lead to irritability, fatigue, perceived hunger (and overeating), and headaches. Stay hydrated by drinking before you start to feel thirsty.


Unplug: While out with friends recently, I looked around the restaurant, and I was struck by the fact that everyone around us was pecking away on their iPhones. I turned my attention back to our table, and found that my friends and I were just as guilty! Break the technology addiction, unplug and be present with the ones who mean the most to you.


Manage your clutter: This might be physical (that pile of mail), emotional (that frenemy) or mental (the never-ending to-do list). Whatever form your clutter takes, make a plan to let it go.


Put your best foot forward: Even if you aren’t happy about some aspect of your body, don’t wait to update your look, get regular mani/pedis or anything else that makes you feel beautiful.


Train your brain: Make a plan to learn something new this year. Learning new things will keep your mind sharp and maybe make new friends.


Learn to ask for help: Whether you’re trying to reach personal or professional goals, or are just getting through the day, try asking trusted friends for help. It feels scary at first, but by asking other for help, you give them an opportunity to support you, and you let them know that they can come to you when they are in need.


Connect with your spirituality: Find your inner peace by making time for religious practice, connecting with nature,  or meditation.


Give back:  Find your own way to give back to your community. Whatever you choose, you’ll feel good about yourself and help others. Everybody wins!
