2nd Saturday Opening Reception: Devoted Obsession

The Art of Kathryn Kain and Sidnea D’Amico

San Francisco artists Kathryn Kain and Sidnea D’Amico will bring their “Devoted Obsession” to SAM’s Gallery on Saturday, April 14th. Kathryn Kain originally hails from Toledo, Ohio and studied art at the Cleveland Art Institute, Toledo University and Arizona State before settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. She completed a BFA, emphasis on printmaking at San Jose State University. After further study with Kenjilo Nanao and Misch Kohn at Cal State Hayward, she earned her MFA in printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute. Ms. Kain’s studio is in San Francisco at Hunters Point Shipyard. Nature, nurture and the deep connection between humans and plants inspire her work. Drawing perishable objects in the vanitas still life tradition – symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death – her work features beautifully rendered fruits, flowers and branches. Her monotypes, collages and paintings have been shown across the USA and Mexico. In 2016 Ms. Kain established her own fine art printing press, Blu Rose Atelier, an independent fine art press focusing on the mono print & monotype. Sidnea D’Amico was born in Brazil, where she studied photography and jewelry design. She settled in the U.S. where she has been developing her art career as a painter and mixed media artist. Sidnea’s works have been included in many group exhibitions around California, such as: Mission Cultural Center in San Francisco, Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica and the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose. She has also participated in shows in Italy, Dubai and Greece. Her work has been published in several books, and she was invited to give a lecture on her artwork for the 2005 exhibition: “Visionary Women” at MCCLA in San Francisco. Sidnea was nominated to represent Brazil in the 2005 Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art in Italy and also won third prize representing Brazil at the Dubai International Art Symposium. You can see this exhibit, curated by William Wareham, through Saturday, June 2.
