Bringing Families Together in the Shared Gift of Adoption: Adoption Choices of Nevada

“Greyson was born at 1:10 a.m., and everyone cried, even the nurses. There was just so much love in the room.” When Desiree chose Melissa and Rich to adopt her baby, none of them were sure exactly what to expect. They were all nervous about their first contact, a Skype call, but within minutes the conversation was flowing and they felt like old friends. Two weeks later, Melissa and Rich were on a plane to Reno to meet Desiree in person. They were in constant contact for the rest of the pregnancy, and they welcomed Greyson into the world together on August 23, 2017. In addition to developing a close relationship with Desiree, Rich and Melissa met and spent time with Greyson’s birth father, paternal aunt, maternal grandmother, and maternal great-aunt. They all shared an evening cooking dinner and talking, which felt comfortable, like family.

Ten years ago, Desiree made a plan of adoption for her daughter, Isabella. She returned to Adoption Choices when she learned she was pregnant with Greyson, “Because they are so caring, so loving, understanding and outstandingly helpful!” She chose open adoption because she wanted the chance to be a part of Isabella and Greyson’s lives. She is honest in acknowledging that adoption is a difficult process, but also reflected, “It is worth it when you give someone such an amazing gift; it not only makes them unconditionally happy, but it makes you feel like an amazingly strong and loving person. All I want in life is to make people happy.”

Adoption Choices of Nevada is proud to have been a part of this incredible adoption story. The agency has now been bringing families together in the shared gift of adoption for ten years. In recognition of the work they do, both Executive Director Maire Burgess and Director of Social Services Jo McLaughlin were honored in September through the Congressional Angels in Adoption program. “The Angels in Adoption® Program is a unique annual opportunity in the nation’s capitol to shine a well-deserved spotlight on the power of adoption and the unspoken heroes who have made the dream of a family a reality for children. Since the program’s inception, over 2,600 Angels have come to Washington to share their firsthand adoption experiences with Members of Congress, highlighting its joys, as well as the barriers encountered in the process,” said Becky Weichhand, Executive Director at CCAI (Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute).

With offices already in Reno and Las Vegas, CAN plans to open a third office in Carson City by this November. Their Reno office is starting a donation center in November, in recognition of National Adoption month. They are a 501(c)(3), so your donation is tax deductible. Donations of the following items in new or gently used condition are greatly appreciated:

  • Children’s clothing, especially coats (sizes toddler - elementary school age)
  • Toddler-size diapers
  • Electric skillets, as many families live in motels and do not have a kitchen
  • Maternity clothes and yoga pants for our expectant moms
