With a name like Nutrition Diva, Monica Reinagel was the perfect fit for Aphrodite. I stumbled upon the masterminded “Diva” through her number-one ranked Nutrition Diva podcast and “Nutrition Over Easy” blog, immediately intriguing me by her simple no-nonsense approach to all things nutrition and weight loss. Monica separates the science from the silliness, food fact from food fiction, and offers a unique spin on the art of eating well.

Not only is she a board-certified, licensed nutritionist, a trained chef, the author of four books, including “The Inflammation Free Diet Plan” and “Nutrition Diva’s Secrets for a Healthy Diet: What to Eat, What to Avoid, and What to stop Worrying About,” but she also is a well known professionally-trained opera singer. During the time that Monica was singing and attending graduate school, Monica found other sources of income to pay the bills that led her into the nutrition and health field. Monica took small jobs here and there, such as a part-time freelancer, a research assistant, and an assistant writing and editing health and nutrition topics for a publishing company.  Monica became so passionate about the health and nutrition industry that she ended up getting her master’s degree in nutrition. It was during this time that Monica had many ‘aha’ moments and realized there was so much wrong information out there repeating itself and wanted to back it up with her scientific background. Monica’s mission was to become a source of reliable information and facts for people interested in eating healthier and becoming more educated on correct information. She wanted to deliver better information to consumers and offer advice to those that are skeptical. Part of her mission is to be empowering by helping people live better lives. So here are a few basics that I walked away from after speaking with Monica:

  • There is not a single RX for every person
  • Bottom line: calories in vs. calories out
  • Our society is very unfamiliar and uncomfortable with having an empty stomach
  • Children respond to hunger innately, whereas the older we get we tend to stop listening to our own bodies’ natural hunger pangs and signals
  • When you are hungry and have that emerging sensation of hunger, try experimenting with not responding for a while. It could be your thirst instead
  • Monica follows a scientific approach that appeals to both men and women
  • 80 percent of how you look is based upon your nutrition
